STATISTICS

  • Around 1 million people in the US experience the use of force by police annually, and they are disproportionately Black and Latinx.
  • Around 5 million people are arrested each year, and only 5% of these arrests are for serious violent offenses.
  • Over 1,100 people were killed by police in 2020. Officers were charged in only 16 of these cases. 58% of these cases were traffic stops, responses to mental illness crises, or non-threatening calls.
  • 1 in 1,000 black men are at risk of being killed by police, more than twice the risk of white men.
  • Police in the US kill more civilians annually than any other wealthy country. The closest country in number of shootings in 2019 was Canada at 36, while the US was around 1,100.
